MARIETTA, Ga. – Athletic director Matt Griffin announced that Southern Polytechnic State University will establish its first-ever Athletics Hall of Fame to celebrate the accomplishments of its greatest student-athletes, coaches and special contributors.
“I am very excited about the announcement of the Southern Polytechnic State University Athletics Hall of Fame,” Griffin said. “Southern Poly has a great tradition of athletic excellence, and it is great to be able to showcase the tremendous talents of our student-athletes, coaches, administrators and supporters of the athletic programs that span a period of nearly six decades.”
Nominations for the Southern Polytechnic Athletics Hall of Fame class are now being accepted through July 31, 2014. Please use the official Southern Poly Athletics Hall of Fame Nomination Form to submit candidates in one of five categories: a student-athlete for athletic achievement; a student-athlete for professional achievement; a coach or an administrator; an individual for distinguished service to the SPSU Department of Athletics; and athletic teams. Before completing the form, those interested in nominating an individual or a team should first read the full descriptions of the categories, criteria and nomination procedure. Completed forms can be emailed to spsu_athletic_hof@spsu.edu, faxed to (678) 915-7483, or sent by mail to SPSU University Communications; 1100 South Marietta Parkway; Marietta, Ga. 30060.
The class, to be selected by a Hall of Fame Committee appointed by Griffin, will be named on three separate occasions. Student-athletes elected to the Hall are scheduled to be unveiled on Sept. 1, followed by coaches and/or administrators on Sept. 22, and finally those for distinguished service and/or team achievements on Oct. 13.
Once the consolidation process between Southern Poly and Kennesaw State University is finalized, the SPSU Athletics Hall of Fame will be housed as a wing of the KSU Athletic Association Hall of Fame, which was established in 2003.
A Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony is planned for March 27, 2015 on the Southern Poly campus. The inductees will be recognized the following day at halftime of Kennesaw State’s spring football game as the Owls prepare for their opening season of intercollegiate competition later in the year.
